Medtronic enters agreement to acquire Nutrino Health

Medtronic and Nutrino Health have announced the companies have entered into a definitive agreement under which Medtronic will acquire Nutrino. Given that food and nutrition are central components in effective diabetes management, the companies recognised an opportunity to improve clinical outcomes for people with diabetes by integrating Nutrino's extensive food analysis infrastructure, nutrition science expertise and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven personalised insights with Medtronic's technology and future innovations.

Stapling devices: better mucosal capture has higher leak pressures

A study evaluating how the interaction between the surgical stapler and tissue may impact staple-line integrity and leak pressure, has concluded that there are differences in the degree of mucosal capture between commercial staplers and that there is a relationship between mucosal capture, leak site location and initial leak pressure.

European Obesity Day will raise awareness of bariatric surgery

European Obesity Day, which takes place on Saturday May 19, is expected to significantly raise awareness of the benefits of bariatric surgery. The annual event, organised by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), is aimed at increasing knowledge about obesity and the many other diseases on which it impacts.

Medtronic Introduces Signia Stapling System for MIS

Medtronic has launched the Signia Stapling System, the latest addition to the company's minimally invasive surgery (MIS) portfolio, which provides surgeons with real-time feedback and automated responses to that real-time data. The Signia system includes Adaptive Firing technology that measures the firing force and adjusts the stapler's speed based on tissue variability measurements, allowing for consistent staple lines.

Medtronic makes investment in Dutch Obesity Clinic

The Nederlandse Obesitas Kliniek (Dutch Obesity Clinic, NOK) and Medtronic have announced that an agreement to enter into a strategic alliance, via a majority ownership position in NOK, with the goal of enhancing NOK's ability to offer integrated, value-based healthcare solutions for the treatment of morbid obesity to more patients, in more locations around the world.

Medtronic launches GastriSail gastric positioning system

Medtronic has announced the availability of the GastriSail gastric positioning system to help promote more consistent sleeve creation and greater procedural efficiency for surgeons performing a sleeve gastrectomy. Developed by the company’s Minimally Invasive Therapies Group, the GastriSail system combines the benefits of three devices into one, allowing surgeons to consistently size and decompress the stomach pouch and test for leaks without removing and reinserting another device (thereby reducing the potential of irritating or injuring the oesophagus during the procedure).

Medtronic completes US$49.9 billion Covidien acquisition

Medtronic has completed the previously announced acquisition of Covidien for an estimated US$49.9 billion. The merger will create a close competitor in size to the medical device business of industry leader, Johnson & Johnson, the parent company of Ethicon. The acquisition will allow Medtronic to expand into new areas especially the weight-loss surgery and laparoscopic markets, in particular energy devices and laparoscopic hand instruments.

Medtronic to buy Covidien for US$42.9 billion

Medtronic has agreed to buy Dublin-based, Covidien, for US$42.9 billion (£25.27 billion) and shift its executive headquarters to Ireland. According to analysts, the cash and stock deal will allow Medtronic to reduce its overall global tax burden, which is currently 18 percent, although the company emphasised the acquisition led by a complementary strategy with Covidien on medical technology, rather than tax considerations.
