US bariatric counsellors group receives accreditation

The American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC) has received accreditation after successfully meeting the standards of education and has become an accredited Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Provider for The Commission of Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“AABC's accreditation reflects achievement of the highest standards of professional credentialing,” said Stephen Phillips, Director of Public Policy for the AABC. “Bariatric science is a science whose time has come.”

ASMBS defends accredited bariatric centres

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has defended the outcomes from bariatric surgery at accredited centres, following the recent announcement by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that it is considering reversing its 2006 decision requiring certification for facilities that perform bariatric surgery on Medicare beneficiaries.

CMS Lap-Band change reduced costs, increased safety

According to a study featured in the Annals of Surgery, the February 2006 decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to restrict reimbursement for bariatric surgery to accredited centres and include coverage for laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) reduced the cost of procedures and increased safety measures.

Brazilian obesity society launches Center of Excellence programme

The Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM), the world's second-largest bariatric surgery society, has announced the launch of a Center of Excellence Programme for bariatric surgery providers in Brazil. The program, which will be administered by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), is designed specifically for Brazilian surgeons and their associated hospitals that are full titular members in good standing with the society.
