Bariatric App Challenge design a weight loss app

The Bariatric App Challenge offers people who are considering/ have had weight loss surgery the opportunity to join us in reviewing or creating an app to help manage their conditio

Researchers at Plymouth University are inviting patients to design apps that they think will be useful for weight loss surgery self-management. Funded by the Intellectual Property Office, the Bariatric App Challenge is part of the Health App Challenge, a one year project run by the university.

“The Bariatric App Challenge offers people who are considering/ have had weight loss surgery the opportunity to join us in reviewing or creating an app to help manage their condition. All you need to do is design an app that you think will be useful for managing pre/post weight loss surgery,” said Emily Ashurst, a research assistant on the project. “For this, you do not need to publish an app just email us your app design in a Word document, PowerPoint slides, mock-up tool, etc.”

A design can be anything you think will be helpful for managing weight loss surgery. Just detail what you would like the app to do, how it would work and what it would look like. For example, it may be helpful for appointment planning, data recording, social support etc.

For submitting an app design before Monday 2nd February 2015, the organisers will award applicants £100 (a short extension can be offered if needed). Plus, if your design is the best reviewed on the website, you will be awarded an extra £200.

Applicants must be UK based and any age (if under 16 will need an adult as teammate), who is considering/ has had weight loss surgery. Please click here to register your interest or email: emily.ashurst@plymouth.ac.uk

The research team can also offer advice on how patients can turn their ideas into apps including useful resources on app development, collaborations, funding, intellectual property etc.

Review an app

The designs will be showcased on the website for other patients to review and give feedback.

“If you don't have time to design your own app - this option is really simple and helpful to others interested in trying out new apps,” she added. “We welcome you to tell us what you think of health apps you may have used past and present. It only takes a few minutes to add your reviews on the Health App Challenge website and we'll enter you into our prize draw to win £200 if you review before 16th March 2015.”
