1st IFSO Middle East North Africa Chapter (MENAC) Meeting

Mark your calendar and come join us in Kuwait for the inaugural congress of the IFSO Middle East North Africa Chapter

On behalf of the executive council of the IFSO Middle East North Africa Chapter (MENAC) it is my honor, privilege and great pleasure to invite you to the 1st IFSO MENAC congress to be held in Kuwait-city April 11th-13th 2019. The congress president Dr Salman Al Sabah and the chair of the scientific committee Dr Bassem Safadi have done an amazing job to bring you an amazing scientific congress in the beautiful city of Kuwait.

We are privileged to have our inaugural congress in collaboration with the 3rd Pan Arab Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (PASMBS), The World Obesity Federation (WOF) including their trademark SCOPE school and the Gulf chapter of the American Association for Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) and the Gulf Obesity Surgery Society (GOSS). Our IFSO MENAC meeting will feature invited presentations as well as accepted abstracts from the MENA region. In addition, we have assembled international, regional and local faculty to bring together a rich program that is filled with debates, panel discussion after each session and controversial issues in the field of obesity, type II Diabetes, bariatric and metabolic surgery.

The collaborative effort organized by our scientific committee has put together 3 days of scientific content delivered by medical, surgical and integrated health experts from IFSO, ASMBS, WOF, AACE, GOSS, PASMBS and the IFSO MENAC. In the following few paragraphs I will summarize the sessions on the 3 days of the IFSO MENAC congress. 

On the 11th of April, we will kick start with the SCOPE school of the World Obesity Federation alongside a full day of invited video presentations by experts in the field. SCOPE school is a program towards certification delivered by the World Obesity Federation. This is the second time that SCOPE school is featured in the MENA region.

On the 12th of April, we have two parallel sessions. We kick start our first session with the IFSO session led by our IFSO president Dr Almino Ramos. In this session, we will have a Gastric bypass debate moderated by Almino Ramos, Ashraf Hadad, Sultan ElTemyatt and Osama Taha. In this session, Drs Almino Ramos, Hayssam Fawal, Abdelrahman Nimeri, Khalid Mirza, Muffazal Lakadawala, Alaa Abbass, Khaled Gawdat and Ali Khammas will debate on one anastomosis and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass covering technical ease of the operations, safety, prevalence of reflux and options for weight regain.

The second session will be on management of complications after bariatric surgery moderated by Drs Mohammad Al Jarallah, Ahmad Bashir and Mohammad Al Sebani. In this session, Drs Salman Al Sabah, Almino Ramos, Bassem Safadi, Muffazal Lakadawala, Adnan Mofti, Elie Chouillard, Sultan ElTemyatt, Ahmad Bashir, Antonio Torres will examine medical and surgical complications after bariatric surgery followed by a panel discussion.

The third session after lunch will be a combined session with World Obesity Federation and the Gulf Chapter of the American Association for Clinical Endocrinology moderated by Nadia Ahmad, Nasreen Al Faris, Ghalia Abdeen, Ebaa Al Ozairi, Abdulla Al Ozairi followed by a panel discussion.

The final session will be an invited session about the surgical treatment for weight regain after sleeve gastrectomy moderated by Drs Mousa Khoursheed, Antonio Torres and Saud Al Subai. In this session, Drs Maher El Chaar, Antonio Torres, Hayssam Fawal, Patrick Noel, Camilo Boza, Aayed Al Qahtani, Elie Chouillard and Tark Mahdy will examine different surgical options available followed by a panel discussion.

The parallel session on the 12th of April will start in the morning with a session of accepted abstracts and integrated health session moderated by Drs Nadia Ahmad and Nasreen Alfaris. This session will be followed a session addressing preoperative care moderated by Dr Nasreen Alfaris. In this session, Drs Nasreen Alfaris, Nadia Ahmad, Ebaa Al Ozairi, Ghalia Abdeen and Abdulla Al Ozairi will discuss medical, nutritional, and psychological assessment followed by a panel discussion.

The third parallel session after lunch will feature accepted abstracts followed by a session examining the multidisciplinary team moderated by Dr Nadia Ahmad. In this final parallel session, Drs Nadia Ahmad, Rawan Abuhasan, Mohammed Al Hadad, Nasreen Alfaris, Ebaa Al Ozairi, Ghalia Abdeen and Abdulla Al Ozairi will discuss the role of the health educator and the importance of communication and set up of the multidisciplinary team.

On the 13th of April, we have two parallel sessions. We kick start our first session with an invited session about special considerations in bariatric surgery moderated by Drs Aayed Alqahtani, Muffazal lakadawala and Waleed Bu Haimed. In this session, Drs Aayed Al Qahtani, Mohamed Haddad, Jon Loy, Salwa Bokhly and Salih bin Salih will discuss pediatric bariatric surgery, safety of bariatric surgery in the elderly as well as pregnancy, fertility in males and females and sexual quality of life after bariatric surgery followed by a panel discussion.

The second session will be the PASMBS session for invited abstracts moderated by Drs Khaled Gawdat, Mohamed Haddad and Bassem Safadi.

The third session after lunch will be an invited session on medical and surgical management of type II Diabetes moderated by Drs Khalid Mirza, Hayssam Fawal and Nasreen Alfaris. In this session, Drs Abdelrahman Nimeri, Osama Taha, Muffazal Lakadawala, Khalid Mirza, Nasreen Alfaris, Antonio Torres and Mohamed Haddad will discuss the best surgical procedure for type II Diabetes and whether type II Diabetes is a medical or surgical disease followed by a panel discussion.

The final session will be an invited session on bariatric surgery in high risk patients moderated by Drs Mohamed jamal, Mansour Alghanem, Amna Shaghouli, Saud Alsubaie and Antonio Torres. In this session, Drs Mohamed Jamal, Wael Jasem, Salman Al Sabah, Ricardo Corcelles will discuss bariatric surgery in patients with liver, renal and pulmonary disesaes followed by a panel discussion. 

The parallel session on the 13th of April will start in the morning with a session on post-operative care of the metabolic surgery patient moderated by Dr Ebaa Alozairi. In this session Drs Nasreen Alfaris, Ghalia Abdeen, Abdulla AlOzairi and Aayed Alqahtani will discuss medical and surgical management of metabolic surgery patients followed by a panel discussion. This session will be followed a session addressing multidisciplinary care for the metabolic surgery patients moderated by Dr Nasreen Alfaris including a panel discussion.

The third parallel session after lunch will feature accepted abstracts followed by a session examining the multidisciplinary team moderated by Dr Nadia Ahmad. In this final parallel session, Drs Nadia Ahmad, Rawan Abuhasan, Mohammed Al Hadad, Nasreen Alfaris, Ebaa Al Ozairi, Ghalia Abdeen and Abdulla Al Ozairi will discuss the role of the health educator and the importance of communication and set up of the multidisciplinary team.
