European Obesity Day, which takes place on Saturday May 19, is expected to significantly raise awareness of the benefits of bariatric surgery. The annual event, organised by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), is aimed at increasing knowledge about obesity and the many other diseases on which it impacts.

For European Obesity Day 2018, EASO is calling for better obesity training for physicians and healthcare providers (HCPs), and for more European Union Member States to recognise obesity as a chronic disease.

“Despite the growing epidemic and the burden it places on healthcare systems, GP’s are given very little training on obesity,” says EASO President, Professor Hermann Toplak. “This is a major barrier to obesity treatment. More effort needs to be made to improve healthcare professionals’ understanding of obesity and comprehensive treatment approaches that can be delivered as part of patient care.”

On Thursday May 17, EASO will hold a major policy conference in Brussels to discuss the topic with representatives from European Commission, the European Parliament, WHO, the OECD, national health ministries and healthcare organisations.

On Friday May 18, Medtronic will be hosting a lunchtime symposium at IFSO-EC in Athens on the opportunity that European Obesity Day specifically provides to widen access to surgical treatment. It will be chaired by Professor Gerhard Prager, President Elect of IFSO-EC.

This year, more than 30 national obesity associations in Europe and more than 70 EASO collaborating centres are participating with initiatives ranging from press briefings and seminars, to public health checks, social media campaigns, and weight awareness events.

Many hospitals and clinics will also be using the occasion to open their doors to the public to explain the effectiveness of treatment options to the media and to prospective patients.
